Homeowner and lead painter walkthrough
Your project might just be one side of your home that only needs body paint. Or you’re only interested in getting a fresh coat of paint to the fascia. So everything on this list might not apply to you.
Powerwash and scrape to remove all peeling paint. Power washing or pressure washing helps remove dirt tucked away in crevices, helps loosen already peeling paint, and creates a clean surface to work with. Usually, it’s left to dry overnight in the summer but colder weather might require an extra day or two. After it's dry, whatever the pressure wash couldn’t remove will be scraped off, usually, the raw material is left. That will then get primed with an exterior-specific primer. Let’s say your house is stucco you won’t need any scraping to it but your trim might need it.
Cover or masking plays a vital role in ensuring there is no unwanted paint on your paintable and unpaintable surfaces. Masking all unpaintable surfaces such as overhanging roofing, lights, and flooring. Permanent features like a light or a doorbell, need to be masked. Entrances always have some type of floor, maybe it’s concrete or wood. Regardless, proper measures need to be taken to prevent overspray.
Usually, a piece of 12-inch paper along the edges where siding or trim meets flooring type and a drop cloth is enough. Sometimes plastic might be needed, especially if it's a 20 ft wall over your less than 3-year-old deck. Spraying can sometimes be a little unpredictable so extra measures need to be taken.
Masking may also apply to the things in your home that don't need a new coat of paint. Some people might have just gotten new gutters installed and don’t need a coat of paint. Gutters can be cut around or masked if you're only painting the fascia. Trim can be masked if you're only painting the West side of the house. So we’ll make sure to always mask with tape, paper, and plastic as needed.
Your home is always shifting. Caulk all cracks on window trim and siding. We usually see this on corner trim and around windows. Windows get heavy weathering. It’s important to keep these seams caulked to prevent moisture from coming into your home.
Use two coats of paint to ensure the best results. This is true for any siding type. Stucco does require an extra step, backroll. Any porous surface you want to paint will always need a backroll to make sure the paint is getting into all those crevices.
Clean up paint chips and trash created during the painting and prepping process. Paint flakes off either in large pieces or small ones usually referred to as paint chips. Maybe the old caulk was removed and now it's on the ground. A good painter picks those up. Now some paint chips are too small to pick up, there really isn't anything that can be done. If you have a flower or vegetable garden you think might get some paint chips, let your painter know so they can take extra measures to prevent paint chips from getting into the bedding. All caulk tubes, paper, plastic, tape, and empty rolls will always be picked up and thrown away.
And finally, the walk-through. This will always be last. This is when the homeowner and the lead painter will walk together. This is where you can point out anything you see that might not look right. Maybe it's a touch-up or cleaning. Once you're happy you can give payment if that painter can take it. Sometimes their lead painter, or maybe the person you walked with will be picking up payment.
Don’t forget: if there’s something you want to be done, ask. If you don’t want something to be done, request it. It’s your home, workplace, or rental. A painter is there to help you make your vision come true.
