Here's the general process:
Mask all surfaces as needed to protect against overspray from texture, mud, removal, installation, paint, and primer with paper and/or plastic (any of the following may be applicable that may require masking: flooring, lights, trim, walls, etc ).
Cut around the damaged wall.
Measure, cut, and install
For attempted patches, remove excess until flush to the wall.
Tape and mud all new seams.
Apply a skim coat to new drywall.
Apply texture to patch/s or drywall.
Clean up all trash created during the prepping and drywall process.
final walkthrough
All drywall repair will be masked off only in the area around the patch.
Cut out damage into a square or rectangle. Measure the new cut out, then cut into a new piece of drywall.
Install 1x2 into the edges of the new cut out on the inside of the wall. This creates an anchor point for the new piece.
Remove texture only around the new cut to allow tape to stick to a flat surface.
Install the new piece of drywall. Apply tape to all 4 seams.
Apply the first coat of mud to tape only. Apply a second coat to the entire patch. Allow dry time between each coat.
When the mud is dry enough, scrape until even with the wall or wet sand with a sponge. Make sure to clean around the edges for better blending.
Once dry, apply texture. Allow dry time and apply more texture if needed.
With a very light hand, use a putty knife to flatten the high spots.
Once the drywall aspect of the job is done, we're ready for primer. Always use a PVA primer for large projects like new walls and popcorn removal. The compound joint or mud is highly porous and requires a primer to seal and create the perfect adhesion for paint. A PVA primer may be used on smaller patches or any primer containing drywall within its list of surface application.
Now you’re ready to paint! Check out our interior painting section to learn about our process!
Clean up all trash created during the prepping and drywall aspect of the process. A skilled painter or experienced drywaller does not leave their trash behind for you, the owner, to clean up. This includes paper, plastic, tape, drop clothes, and any trash that could've been dragged in under shoes. Now some homeowners do take cleaning into their hands, but that should never include anything outside of the usual cleaning habits such as mopping, sweeping, or vacuuming. Your painter or drywaller might even offer to vacuum for you.
And finally, the walk-through. This will always be last. This is when the homeowner and the lead painter/drywaller will walk together. This is where you can point out anything you see that might not look right. Maybe it's a touch up or a missed spot that didn’t get cleaned. Once you're happy, you can give payment if that painter can take it. Sometimes their lead painter, or maybe the person you walked with, will be picking up payment.
Don’t forget, if there’s something you want done, ask. If you don’t want something to be done, request it. It’s your home, workplace, business, or rental. A professional painter is there to help you make your vision come true.
